Fellows design course on energy needs in developing countries
Two of our IGERT fellows, Lenore Kubie (Chemistry) and Rebecca Berman (Optics), have developed a short course in conjunction with M. J. Curry (Education). The course explores the differences in energy needs and utilization in a third world country compared to the United States. The IGERT students lead teaching the course and draw upon their experience in Ghana. The course helps to prepare the new IGERT students for their externship in Ghana, but it also sets a framework for students to consider their research in a broader context. By introducing the students to the different technological and economic constraints in another country, it enables students to think of new research opportunities that otherwise might not be considered.
