Intensive fishery management course a continued success
The North Pacific Fisheries Management Council (NPFMC) Course continues to be a highlight for the MESAS IGERT trainees. The Council has primary responsibility for fisheries management in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. The intensive 2-week course consists of classroom preparation the week prior to the meeting, discussing the Council organization and administration and background on the issues to be addressed at the meeting, and attendance at the Council meeting. IGERT faculty that have experience working with the NPFMC teach the course, providing invaluable insights. Trainees appreciate this opportunity to experience the policy-making process first hand, to be able to see how science is utilized by decision-makers, and to interact with the various stakeholders that attend the Council meetings and engage in the fishery management process.
