Faculty member develops marine science educational activities
IGERT faculty member Anne Beaudreau participated in an interdisciplinary working group at Oregon State University earlier this spring focusing on the educational activities for a National Science Foundation’s Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability Research Coordination Network (SEES-RCN) on marine ecosystem science and management. A framework for a training aimed at late stage graduate students and early career scientists that sets the development of cross-disciplinary communication as a central goal was discussed. The training will capitalize on the participants’ existing knowledge in their respective disciplines by having them work on projects that address ‘big questions’ in marine resource management; specifically, questions that need interdisciplinary perspectives to find solutions. Beaudreau gave a presentation on the MESAS IGERT program at the meeting and hopes to involve MESAS IGERT students in the training program, scheduled for summer 2014.
