IGERT Teaching Lab provides hands-on immersive experience

The iQuISE IGERT Teaching Lab was set up to demonstrate essential quantum optical properties of photons including three specific measurements: the Hong-Ou-Mandel two-photon quantum interference, generation and characterization of polarization-entangled photon pairs, and violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt form of Bell's inequality. The Teaching Lab was utilized as part of the 2012 iQuISE summer school on Quantum Information Science for undergraduates. Experimental demonstration was presented to the class in two sessions and feedback from the class was highly positive. The Teaching Lab setup is available throughout the year to interested iQuISE associates for hands-on immersive experience that allows them to manipulate optical components of the setup, make measurements and compare the results with theory. Pairs of students, some of them are theory oriented, typically spend three consecutive afternoons in the Teaching Lab performing the three experiments on their own.
