Students learn complex systems theory in project-based courses
As part of their IGERT requirement to complete the transdisciplinary Certificate of Graduate Study in Complex Systems, in their first year most of the trainees took Modeling Complex Systems, Principles of Complex Systems, and Evolutionary Computation. These challenging graduate project-based courses teach students complex systems theory and methods for approaching problems in a variety of application domains, including social, biological, and technological systems. As one example project, IGERT trainees teamed up to use genetic programming to evolve models for electric load forecasting at multiple time scales (yearly, monthly, hourly) and wrote and presented a conference-style paper on this work.
