Trainees make contributions to power wheelchair project
Two of our IGERT fellows, Mr. Candiotti and Ms. Houston, have contributed towards significant technological enhancements to the PerMMA project, a power wheelchair with robotic arms. Mr. Candiotti has focused on the control system, developing a stabilizing and stair-climbing capability utilizing pneumatics. Ms. Houston has developed an interactive user-interface using mobile applications on a tablet. The system, thanks to the IGERT fellows' respective contributions, symbiotically functions together to improve both a user's mobility (through the wheelchair) and manipulation (robotic arms).
