Achievement

A second new course Design for Global Sustainability: Electronics II, offered in Spring 2013, used four modules to explore key issues related to sustainable electronics, materials, manufacture, and life cycle. Thirteen students, 4 from Tuskegee and 9 from Purdue, and 13 faculty from 7 disciplines actively participated. Working in cross-institution interdisciplinary teams, students completed modules addressing technical, business, social, and governmental aspects of electronics manufacturing. Modules included Polymers in Electronics, Manufacturing and Unit Processes, Sustainable Electronics: Supply Chains, and Voluntary Standards and Legislation Module. Course outputs include technical concepts, student led discussions, writing research abstracts, proposals, and papers. Students applied disciplinary knowledge to analyze and synthesize critical processes, social impact, and regulatory approaches to address environmental challenges of electronics production, use, and disposal.
