Policy implications of evolving trends in nanotechnology and neuroscience
IGERT Co-PI & faculty Miller (Science Policy) led the publication of a multi-institutional initiative called “Nanotechnology, the Brain, and the Future” to examine the policy implications of evolving trends in nanotechnology and neuroscience. The project reflects a major advancement in technology assessment methods that are carried out alongside cutting edge research/innovation processes, as well as in anticipatory analysis that can identify and assess social, ethical, and policy considerations in advance of technology development. Specific accomplishments include the first national survey of public attitudes about technology-enabled cognitive enhancement; the first national public deliberation on the future of neurotechnologies; comparative case studies of several neurotechnological prostheses, brain implants, and brain repair technologies; and broad assessments of ethical, political, and regulatory challenges raised by these technologies and potential approaches for addressing them.
