Development of interdisciplinary projects

Our objective is to encourage integration of advance computer science research tools into molecular biophysics and systems biology. Although in the first year of operation and with one active trainee, the process of recruiting students to the program has led to the development of interdisciplinary projects that new IGERT trainees will conduct beginning in the Fall semester.

The first project involves visualization of large data sets obtained from the Spallation Neutron Source to image protein-protein interaction and will allow for the engineering of biodetoxification enzymes for use in bioremediation projects. This student will receive a degree in Life Sciences with a Computational Science minor.

The second involves computer modeling of enzymatic reactions and will be mentored by faculty from the Computer Science, Chemistry, and Molecular Biology departments. This student will receive a degree in Computer Engineering with a Computational Science minor.
