Achievement

The trainees participated in an Academic Workshop during Summer 2008. The workshop consisted of a panel of IGERT faculty members providing information about academic careers. Topics covered included "Pros and Cons of Academic Positions", "Mentoring and Managing Graduate Students", "Writing Successful Proposals", "Education and Academics", "Interactions with Industry", "The Tenure Process", "Pros and Cons of Interdisciplinary Research", Time Management in Academia and Family Life", and "Preparing for Your Academic Career". Assessment of the workshop showed that all topics were beneficial to the trainees. In addition, prior to the workshop, only 38% of the trainees said they were considering an academic career. After the workshop, 63% of the trainees said they were now considering an academic career.
