Impact of invasive tilapia on the Kafue Watershed
GLOBES trainee Andy Deines returned to Zambia in Fall 2008 for further research involving his study of the impact of invasive tilapia on the Kafue Watershed and its implications for future management of natural resources and sustainability of fisheries worldwide. Deines was joined by Notre Dame undergraduate Brianna Klco who, under Deines' supervision, investigated the ratio of Nile tilapia and its hybrids as compared to other fish species in the marketplace by conducting interviews and collecting tissue samples for further genetic study. Before returning to the States, Deines presented his most recent findings at a European Union conference for the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries in Florence, Italy, in November of 2008.
