Blurring boundaries between research and teaching

It is crucial to connect concurrent research with the knowledge that is discussed in class. Since much of the knowledge to be imparted is part of ongoing research, this is rarely available in the codified form of a book. In recognition of this, we have chosen to deliberately blur the boundary between research and teaching by adopting these principles in how we teach classes: (a) in-class examination of data / results from contemporaneous experiments (b) projects are open ended and address a facet of outstanding research issues and (c) embedding students as observers / participants in ongoing experiments. For example, in spring 2009 we offered a seminar on mixed reality rehabilitation. Students whose doctoral research was relevant to the seminar participated. Our approach to integrating their research with education produced new research insights as well as enabled them to critically re-examine their research approaches.
