Nanoscience workshops for high school teachers

The MCTP program runs nanoscience workshops for high school teachers and provides teachers with kits containing all of the supplies necessary to perform the experiments in their class rooms. This year our program continues to grow, exposing students from across the greater LA area to the excitement of nanoscience. We have also made a number of improvements to our experiments. The most important of these is to revamp our water filtration experiment, which was just introduced last year, to make it broader. The initial version of the experiments focused only on chemical contaminants, but the new version also addresses how nanoscience can be used to remove biological contaminants from water, which is a pressing issue in much of the world today. Finally, we are working on a new experiment on energy storage in the form of supercapacitors. While this experiment is still under development, it should complement our existing solar energy harvesting experiment.
