IGERT student receives NSF-DDIG for research on malarial resistance

Description

IGERT student Felicia Gomez received an NSF-DDIG for her work on malaria resistance candidate genes. Gomez’s dissertation will investigate the nucleotide variation at two candidate genes , intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and CD36, in a diverse group of African and non-African human populations. Her research will address how natural selection and demography have affected the pattern of variability at these loci. By understanding how genetic diversity may relate to other factors for malarial infection, Gomez will contribute to understanding the spread of this disease.
