IP Negotiation Exercise
Description
Clean Green IGERT (CGI) at UCLA held a four hour intellectual-property negotiation exercise on September 8, 2011 led by Cynthia Cannady, (principal and founder of IPSEVA) and Shahin Farshchi, (Lux Capital Management).
Teams of CGI trainees role-played the interested parties in a mock negotiation between the university inventors and the corporation licensing the technology. This negotiation exercise built upon a workshop with Cannady earlier in the year where the trainees learned about patents and how to make the best use of them.

2) How to build and implement an IP strategy?
3) How to use patents and other IP in deals?
Cynthia Cannady is a principal and founder of IPSEVA. She is an expert in intellectual property strategy and technology licensing. She holds a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor degree with honors from Stanford University. She is a member of the Bars of the State of California and the District of Columbia.
Prior to founding IPSEVA in 2007, Mrs. Cannady was Director of the Intellectual Property and New Technologies Division at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, where her responsibilities included direction of activities and international training programs relating to IP strategy, licensing, technology transfer, valuation, and IP asset man-agement. (2001-2007). Her professional experience has included: Principal, Tech Law Group, Menlo Park, California (1997 to 2001); Apple Computer, Vice President of Law for Manufacturing and Development, Cupertino, California (1993 to 1997); Partner, Litigation, Fenwick & West, Palo Alto, California (1984 to 1992).
Shahin Farshchi is a senior associate with Lux Capital, focusing on investments in semiconductor, wireless, and alternative energy technologies. Before joining Lux, Shahin held technical positions at General Motors and several Silicon Valley technology startups. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering Computer Science with College of Engineering Honors from the University of California at Berkeley, and M.S. and Ph.D . degrees in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Management from the University of California at Los Angeles. Shahin has also served as a postdoctoral scholar at the UCLA department of Electrical Engineering. His graduate research on wireless biosignal telemetry has been published in over 10 IEEE conference proceedings and 3 IEEE journals. He sourced Lux’s investment in Silicon Clocks (acquired by NASDAQ:SLAB) and played key roles in Lux’s investment in Everspin and Luxtera. He works closely in supporting all of Lux’s energy and semiconductor companies.
Shahin has been an invited speaker/panelist at a variety of Universities and organizations including the IEEE, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, UCI, the California Cleantech Initiative, Entretec, and the MIT Club of Silicon Valley. He also serves as an advisor to the Clean Energy for Green Industry fellowship program at UCLA.
