Doctoral Student Scholarships, Vespucci Summer Institute on Geographic Information Science Fiesole and Florence, Italy, June & July 2011

The IGERT Program in Geographic Information Science at the University at Buffalo invites applications from U.S. doctoral students for the 2011 Vespucci Summer Institute on Geographic Information Science in Fiesole, near Florence, Italy. There will be two Vespucci weeks in 2011, and students may apply for support to participate in either week. Week 1, June 5 to 10, 2011 will be on ?“Volunteered Geographic Information”, facilitated by Michael Goodchild, Michael Gould, Muki Haklay, and Max Craglia. Week 2, July 17 to 23, 2011?, will be on "Process Ontology, facilitated by Antony Galton, Michael Grüninger, David Mark, and Werner Kuhn. Financial support available under this competition will include tuition and fees for the Institute, an allowance for accommodation expenses in Fiesole, and up to $1,900 in travel expenses. We anticipate funding about 6 applicants in 2011. Due to the rules of the National Science Foundation, financial support from the Buffalo IGERT program is limited to US Citizens or Permanent Residents. Others are encouraged to apply directly to the Vespucci program.

Applications must include:
• a 1-page statement of the applicant’s background and interest in the 2011 School, including specific material about their connection to the topic of the week for which they are applying;
• a brief curriculum vitae, including dissertation topic and expected PhD completion date;
• a letter of support from the student’s Ph.D. advisor, committee member, department chair, or IGERT program director.

The application deadline is April 20, 2011. Applications must be submitted in .pdf or .doc format, including letter of endorsement, via e-mail attachment, to dmark@buffalo.edu. We plan to announce decisions by May 1, 2011.
