GLOBES Fellow Awarded Translational Research Fellowship
Description:
GLOBES/IGERT Associate James Clancy, a third year graduate student studying under Dr. Crislyn D’Souza Schorey in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, has been awarded an Indiana Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTSI) predoctoral fellowship for the 2010/2011 year. The prestigious fellowship supports Clancy’s graduate studies in translational cancer research. The award review was an extremely competitive process this year with nearly 50 predoctoral applications. Clancy will receive a twelve-month stipend along with travel funds for training at the National Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program meeting to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, in May of 2011.
Translational research, according to the Indiana CTSI website, refers to the process by which research in the lab “translates” into patient treatment. It may involve applying discoveries made during research to the development of clinical trials and studies in humans, or carrying out research aimed at enhancing the adoption of best practices, or both.
As a GLOBES fellow in training, Clancy must fulfill interdisciplinary program requirements that demonstrate a willingness to look beyond the laboratory in finding effective solutions to human health concerns. Criteria for the Indiana CTSI award includes co-mentorship by faculty investigators from at least two different disciplines as well as research that is translational in nature.
