CPC trainees excel
CPC IGERT trainee James Hull (Sociology) defended his dissertation in December 2009 and began a postdoc at Brown University in January 2010. Margaret Carrel (Geography) successfully defended her dissertation proposal, "Space-time differentiation of drivers of and barriers to H5N1 avian influenza evolution in Vietnam," in November 2009. Sophia Giebultowicz (Geography: "Social Networks and Cholera Transmission in Bangladesh") and Ashton Verdery (Sociology: "Demography and Social Network Differentiation") successfully defended Masters theses during this reporting period.
Duke University Postdoctoral Fellow Clark Gray (IGERT alumnus; 2008 PhD, UNC-CH Geography) won the 2010 J. Warren Nystrom Award, AAG's annual award for best paper based on a recent dissertation ("Environment, Land and Rural Out-Migration in the Southern Ecuadorian Andes"). Sophia Giebultowicz (Geography) won the Jacques May Award, AAG's annual award for the best thesis in health and medical geography.
