Research Achievements
Producing a bacterial vaccine strain
Trainee Mike Norris developed the techniques for producing a bacterial vaccine strain and showing that it was attenuated in in-vitro cell models. Mike followed-up on this advance with a collaboration at Colorado State University where the bacterial strain was shown to be attenuated in animals. The vaccination project has shown that the vaccine Mike engineered protects against the inhalation form of the disease melioidosis, and is now in preparation. Mike also assisted in writing the grant proposals that led to two awards in support of the type of research described above.
