Historical ecology study of coral reef ecosystems

IGERT Trainee Jack Kittinger led a collaborative project reconstructing changes in coral reef ecosystem conditions in the Hawaiian archipelago. Working with an international team of researchers from a variety of disciplines, Jack completed the integration of archaeological, ethnographic, anecdotal, and modern ecological data into a historical ecology study. This required novel integrative research methods for data synthesis and analysis. The results, which include new insights for marine conservation science and policy, are being prepared for submission to a high impact journal later this year. Jack has received two grant awards and an "Honorable Mention" from the American Fisheries Society for this work.
