IGERT trainee Margaret Carrel (Geography) successfully defended her dissertation, "Space-time differentiation of drivers of and barriers to H5N1 avian influenza evolution in Vietnam," in March 2011 and begins a tenure track position in Geography at the University of Iowa in August.
Brian Miller (Ecology: "Linking Conservation Goals and Outcomes: The Social-Ecological Dynamics of Drought Resource Management") and Veronica Escamilla (Geography: "The Geography of Groundwater Quality and Diarrheal Disease in Rural Bangladesh") successfully defended dissertation proposals during this reporting period.
Ashton Verdery's master's paper that originated from his IGERT project was awarded the American Sociological Association's Graduate Student Paper Award for the Mathematical Sociology Section.
