Chemical composition of mineral dust in human tissue
Trainee Millicent Schmidt and 3MT faculty member Richard Reeder, both Geosciences, used advanced synchrotron-based techniques to determine the composition of dust particles embedded in lung tissue of an Army veteran who was stationed in Iraq. This study, published in the medical literature, is one of the first applications of this microscopic technique to resolve the chemical composition of mineral dust in human tissue. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Northport VA Hospital.
