Research Achievements
Climate sovereignty as a feature of self-determination
IGERT Trainee Paula Smith presented research at the 2012 International Polar Year conference in Montreal, Canada. Her project, Climate Change and Climate Sovereignty in Northern Norway: Do Arctic Peoples Have the Right to the Cold?, examines the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as they relate to climate sovereignty as a feature of self-determination. The presentation is a direct result of EPSCoR-funded field research Paula conducted in early 2011 in which she combined climate and historical records, and conducted interviews on the ways in which the Indigenous Sámi reindeer herders interface with their landscape and reindeer practices.
