Genetics of the Hawaiian monk seal
Jennifer Schultz became our first IGERT Fellow to complete her PhD degree, finishing her doctoral dissertation on the conservation genetics of the Hawaiian monk seal. Her work on the genetics of the Hawaiian monk seal showed it has the lowest genetic diversity of any marine mammal yet studied. These results are providing data crucial to the recovery of this highly endangered species unique to the Hawaiian Islands. As a result of this research she has compiled an impressive list of awards as an IGERT Graduate Fellow, including a 3-year EPA STAR stipend, a $40,000 NOAA award. Jenny now has a position as a SOEST Young Investigator post-doctoral researcher with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii.
