Professional development workshops for IGERT trainees
This year our IGERT organized several professional development workshops designed around the requests and needs of the IGERT fellows and their peers. The workshop organizers also encouraged participation from graduate students and faculty outside our IGERT program. The first a was weeklong workshop on the basics of the R statistical software package. Our second workshop focused on communicating science to the public. The objective was to learn how to use multimedia tools for effectively informing the non-science community. Two additional workshops were on methods for selecting mathematical models and designing microarrays for genetic analysis. Further, several of our IGERT fellows attended workshops on mosquito identification and vector control in Florida. Finally as part of the community outreach component of this IGERT some of our fellows attended community-based management workshops, e.g., on community-based marine protection.
